This page sets out the rules every page on Legal by State follows. It was last reviewed on September 18, 2026.
1. Purpose
We explain the law. We do not promote, recommend or sell products, operators, dispensaries, betting sites or legal services. A page on this site tells you what a state’s law says, when it changed, what is allowed and what is not, and where to read the law yourself.
2. Accuracy and sources
- Every legal statement is tied to a primary source: the statute or code section, an agency rule or guidance document, an attorney general opinion or a court decision. We link to the official text wherever an official copy exists online.
- Secondary sources (law-firm analyses, legislative tracking services, local news) are used to find and confirm developments, and are cited as such. They never replace the primary source for a legal claim.
- Where the law is unsettled — conflicting authority, an enjoined statute, uneven enforcement — we say so and label the state’s status as a gray area rather than pick a side.
- Every page shows the date it was last reviewed. Pages in fast-moving areas (hemp, cannabis, gambling) are re-checked at least every 60–90 days and whenever we learn of a change.
3. Use of AI
We use AI tools to help draft, structure, summarize and update our guides. AI-assisted drafts are never published as-is. A human editor verifies each legal claim, checks each citation and link, and is responsible for the final page. Our AI use is disclosed here and on our About page because we think readers should know how a page was made.
4. Not legal advice
Nothing on Legal by State is legal advice, and reading it does not create an attorney–client relationship. Our editor is not a lawyer. Laws change, local ordinances may add rules we do not cover, and how a law is enforced can differ from what it says. For a decision that matters, consult a licensed attorney in your state.
5. Corrections
If you believe something on this site is wrong or out of date, email alex@legalbystate.com with the page URL and, if you can, the source that shows the correct information. We review every report, fix confirmed errors as quickly as we can, and add a note on the page describing what changed.
6. Sponsored and partner content
- Sponsored articles are published only in our Partner section, are labeled “Sponsored” at the top of the page, and are never mixed into our legal guides.
- Advertisers have no say over what our guides say, which states we cover, or how we describe any law, company or product.
- We decline sponsored content that gives legal, medical or financial advice, that targets minors, or that misrepresents the law in any state.
- We keep the amount of sponsored content small relative to our editorial pages so that the site stays what it is: a reference, not an advertising network.
- Our legal guides contain no affiliate links and no product recommendations.
7. Privacy and comments
We do not run comment sections, and we collect no personal information beyond what our hosting provider logs to keep the site running. See our Privacy Policy for details.
